That said, with my admittedly limited experience with e-readers, it probably comes down to three questions: There are also models like the Boyue Likebook Mars and Onyx Boox Note out there if you're wanting something more platform-agnostic (sort of, since they're openly Android-based). That still covers the Kindle Paperwhite (and/or Oasis, albeit with ads on the lock screen AIUI), or the Nook Glowlight 3, or the Kobo Aura 2.and those are indeed the major players. If you're willing to jump through a hoop or two to move ebooks around on your own, then it's more a question of what you're looking for in an e-reader.and a backlight doesn't reduce your possibilities as much as you'd think. I thank you for your time and input elsewhere in this sub and hopefully here. If I can add or clarify anything, I'll be glad to. I've seen the Kindle ecosystem both praised and damned, and probably would prefer to not feel locked in to it unless it's really so great that it's worth the annoyance (and apparently the extra cost to avoid ads). I have books both from Amazon and not, and have no qualms stripping what I've bought of DRM to read elsewhere. Waterproof or not makes no difference to me, though I would prefer something that I can get a nice cover/case for it and that it will travel well.Īs far as ecosystems and libraries go, I have no idea. Much of this reading I do at night, so something that accounts for that (blue light? illuminated screen?) might be beneficial. I do read newspapers online, so that might be something I would do on an ereader, but it's not necessary. I do not enjoy audiobooks so that feature is irrelevant. I envision the ereader being almost entirely utilized for novels, though my work reading is limited only by my inexperience with ereaders and my need to mark and take notes, so something with good options for that would be nice.

Thought I'd throw down some thoughts and see if this community might help me find a good option. Been trying to read comparisons and reviews, but most seem to focus solely on Kindle and Kobo and I'm learning here about other options and features I didn't know existed. I've decided to get an ereader and transition at least my fiction reading to it, but I'm a noob.
